Tyre, Lisa Lewis Last in a Long Line of Rebels, 279 pgs. Penguin, 2015. $16.99. Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG.
12-year-old Lou is hoping for an exciting summer, so when she makes a wish on an old Bible and overhears her parents talk about the possibility of losing the family home, she drafts her friends into helping her come up with a plan to save the nearly 200-year-old house. Diary entries from the civil war of her namesake and great grandmother add to the intrigue and mystery.
A wonderful mix of history, family, and friendship with a little civil rights and football thrown in for good measure. The back story was as believable and as exciting as the race to save the house. Engaging characters and a well planned mystery, boys will enjoy this middle level read as much as the girls will.
