Andrews, Troy Trombone Shorty, illustrated by Bryan Collier. PICTUREBOOK. Abrams, 2015. $17.95 Content: G.
Troy Andrews got a trombone when he was only 4 years old. That’s why everyone called him trombone shorty. He came from a musical family and loved playing so much he practiced every day. One day, while at a concert, Bo Diddley heard Troy playing along and invited him onstage to play with the band.
Today Troy is a well known musician who has created a foundation to make sure that kids who grow up in difficult circumstances can also have dreams, like Trombone Shorty. The illustrations are watercolor and collage and are splendid. There is a an author’s note (this is an autobiography) and an illustrator’s note at the end, helping to reader to appreciate the story more. I wish it came with a CD so we could hear him play!
