Green, Poppy Forget-Me-Not Lake (The Adventures of Sophie Mouse #3), illustrated by Jennifer A. Bell. Little Simon, 2015. $5.99. Content: G.
Sophie Mouse is excited about her latest research project for school. She and her various classmates are to learn about their own species and share any special facts with the class. But when Sophie hears ahead of time what makes each animal unique, she begins to wonder if there's anything special at all about being a plain old mouse.
This beginning chapter book has a large font, a simple plot line, and illustrations throughout, making it perfect for students who are newly ready to move on from traditional picture books and early readers. While the plot isn't the most page-turning, it's still enjoyable. Sophie is a sympathetic character, and the special facts about different species are interesting. Although this is the third in the series, it stands on its own fairly well.
