Heather is just a normal little girl who is bright and happy and whose life is full of love. She doesn’t realize that her family, with two mommies, is different than other families, until she goes to school for kindergarten. Luckily she has wonderful teacher who helps the class to see that each family is special, and that love is what is important.
This is a wonderful story that made me teary. The new illustrations by Laura Cornell add a vibrancy and warmth. As school librarians we know that this book can be controversial in a school library, as we are acting in place of the parents. Its seems unfair to restrict it from circulation, yet, if children take it home, you could be facing a conservative and enraged parent. I like to see it as a part of cohesive instructional unit on family members, acceptance, and types of families.
