The Prairie Thief by Melissa Wiley - OPTIONAL

Wiley, Melissa  The Prairie Thief, 215 pgs.  Margarget K. McElderry Books, 2012.  $15.99.  Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG;

Louisa Brody's life is turned upside down when her father is accused of thievery.  Together with her new friend Jessamine, they discover the truth and set out to prove her father's innocence.  Little did they suspect that the answer to their questions would come from a most unexpected character.

One of the most engaging aspects of The Prairie Thief is that it combines fantasy creatures with the historical setting of the pioneer era.  Louisa is a brave, smart heroine who is fiercely loyal to her father and determined to clear his name.  With shorter chapters, delightful illustrations, and a quick pace, this is a good choice for 3rd-5th graders who are branching into novels.  Although I was not surprised by the path the story took, I enjoyed it.  It's a delightful tale about loyalty, friendship and courage.
