Sazaklis, John Man of Steel: The Fate of Krypton Illustrated
by Jeremy Roberts Harperfestival,
2013. $3.99 PICTURE BOOK
Content: G.
Jor-El is an advanced
scientist on the planet Krypton and he learns that their planets core is too
hot and is going to explode. When he
asks the council of the planet to move the people, he is ignored. Jor-El quickly goes home to his wife and they
decide that they need to send their son, Kal-El, to the planet earth so he will
survive. Kal-El is sent in a little
space craft and it lands on a farm on earth, where he is found by a married
couple, the Kents. The Kents decide to
raise Kal-El as Clark. Clark soon finds
that he has amazing powers that he plans on using to help the earth.
This story
focuses on where Superman was born and how his parents decided to send him to
planet earth. The illustrations are more
graphic novel looking, instead of the pictures used from the Man of Steel
movie. Each page spread has a paragraph of
about five sentences, and the reading level seems more geared towards third
grade. If you have readers who are
interested in superheroes, they will probably pick this book up, but it’s not
the typical stories of Superman that they will be used to.
