Princess Posey and the New First Grader by Stephanie Greene -- ADVISABLE

Greene, Stephanie and Stephanie Roth Sisson Princess Posey and the New First Grader 96 pgs. Puffin Books, 2013. $12.99.

In the words of her mom, Posey and her two best friends are "like three peas in a pod." But when a new girl moves in and is immediately accepted into their group, Posey becomes jealous and refuses to play nicely, which hurts the new girl's feelings. A lesson from their teacher helps both girls learn to get along and even become friends, and a great idea from Posey ensures that no one is left out again.

This is a sweet and very real story about dealing with the jealousy that can happen when your friends want to be friends with someone else, too. It's also a nice reminder that new children feel vulnerable and lonely and could use a little extra acceptance from their peers. Although this is part of a series, it stands alone just fine. While it would appeal to students of various ages, the reference to first grade in the title limits the audience somewhat, making it Advisable instead of Essential. For a first grade classroom collection, however, it is a definite must-have.
