President Squid by Aaron Reynolds - OPTIONAL

Reynolds, Aaron President Squid, illustrated by Sara Varon. PICTURE BOOK. Chronicle Books, 2016. $16.99.

Mr. Squid would like to be president.  He has all the qualifications.  He wears a tie, lives in a huge house, is famous, bossy and does all the talking.  But when the other sea creatures aren’t impressed, Mr. Squid discovers that he also has to be helpful, which it too much work for him.  He’d rather be king.

The fluorescent squid is very full of himself and the story pokes fun at presidential campaigns.  This book is good for a laugh, but it doesn’t teach about what a presidential candidate really should be, just what he shouldn’t be.  It might be a good springboard for talking about government and what should people look for in a candidate.  Its humor just didn’t hit the mark with me.
