Miyakoshi, Akiko The Storm, PICTUREBOOK. Kids Can Press 2016. $16.95. Content: G.
A young boy is excited to go to the beach, but when a big storm approaches and his parents prepare the house for it, his plans might be cancelled. That night, the sound of the rain helps him dream he is on a big ship with huge propellers to drive the storm away.
The charcoal illustrations give this book a stormy feel. Lots of shadows, but a touch of color here and there adds hope. The day after the storm is a big surprise! The story itself wasn’t as exciting as the illustrations, and with all of the preparations for the storm, the story ended rather abruptly. Could this be the translator’s interpretation?
