Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown-OPTIONAL

Brown, Anne Greenwood, Lies Beneath. Pgs 306. Disney Hyperion, 2012. $17.99. Language:PG-13 (19 swears, no “f”s), Mature Content: PG-13 Violence: PG-13

Calder and his sisters are murderous mermaids. As an infant, John Hancock was promised to Calder’s family. Told from birth that Lake Superior is full of monsters, John avoids them like the plague. Now he’s moved back to Lake Superior after a long time. Dispatched to lure his daughter, Lily, to the sea instead, Calder disguises herself as a human and heads ashore. A romance, however, soon ensues and he begins to doubt his mission. Will Calder choose Lily or his family?
Most of the characters are likable, but Calder isn’t quite believable as a reluctant murderer in love. A little more back story about the mermaids would’ve also been nice. The plot is a little dark, but is well developed and semi-plausible. Overall, die-hard fans of dark romance books will enjoy reading this book, but may fall short for those looking just for a mermaid book. MS, HS. OPTIONAL. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
