Capucilli, Alyssa Satin This Bear's Birthday, illustrated by
Lorna Hussey. PICTURE BOOK. Henry Holt and Company, 2017. $16.99.
It is Bear's
birthday and he is excited to be getting older, bigger and more able to do
things on his own. As he and his parents throw a birthday party, Bear keeps
trying to do things on his own--get dressed, make the picnic lunch, etc. Each
time he needs a little bit of help and then he can do it "on his
own!" Bear learns that as he is growing older, there are still things he
will need help with but there will also be things he can do on his own!
Perhaps
it was the autumnal motif (of which I am a huge fan), but I really enjoyed this
book from the first read. The illustrations are wonderful--very sweet and full
of color--and the text is simple and the perfect length for a read-aloud. The
story about growing up is perfectly suited for kids who are anxious to grow up
and be more independent. It will also be a big winner for those looking for a
simple birthday book.
