Claybourne, Anna Scanorama Deadly Predators, 30
pages. Silver Dolphin (Quarto), 2016. $19.
This interactive book contains a ton of information about a wide
variety of animal predators. It groups them mainly by species: Cats, Wolves and
Dogs, Sharks, Sea Mammals, Repties, and Birds, and more. Most of the facts are
little blurbs and interesting things, and some lift the tab images. Some pages
have a list of typical prey or how they size up to a human. The big draw here
is the four interactive x-ray pages that allow readers to see the bones of various
creatures by moving a slider.
I rated this book as optional only because integrative books
tend to get trashed easily especially in a library situation. I do think
students would really love this book though. It’s well written and interesting
and the illustrations and photos are engaging and well crafted. One
thing that could be done to make this book work for you library is to show the
student who is checking the book out how to carefully move the sliders. (or as
a class). Additionally teachers could use this in a classroom when they do
a unit on predator and prey.
