McCartney, Tania A Kiwi Year:
Twelve Months in the Life of New Zealands Kids, 32
pages. EK Books (Exisle), 2017. $18. PICTURE BOOK
This book features a double page spread for each month of the
year. On the two pages it shows what a typical child (there are 5 featured)
might do during that month: holidays, food, sports, activities, enjoying the
weather, and festivals. It features simple bright illustrations.
Although this book is stuffed with small facts, it somehow
manages to be too much and not enough all at once. Students looking to learn
about New Zealand will bogged down with tons of little things but nothing substantive.
For example there are the names of holidays and festivals without much
information certainly not enough to make it interesting or useful. I have to
say I think this book would be better if it has photographs instead of
illustrations. Don’t get me wrong the illustrations are really cute, but I
wanted to see the amazing trees, unique sights, and unfamiliar food in more
detail. I wouldn’t add this to my library collection.
