Ben’s Revolution: Benjamin Russell and the Battle of Bunker Hill, 64
pgs. PICTURE BOOK Nancy Paulsen Books, 2017. $17.99
Content: G.
In 1775, the
Revolutionary War is starting and young Ben Russell gets separated from his
family. He joins the patriots and aids
in the war against the British soldiers, watching the beginning battles take
place. Ben is eventually reunited with
his family and sees the war to its end.
I
really wanted to love this book, but it wasn’t great. The character isn’t developed enough to
relate to him and the reader would need to have a basic understanding of the
Revolutionary War or they wouldn’t be able to understand what is
happening. The illustrations were
fantastic. There is a biography about Benjamin Russell at the end that explains
what happens throughout the rest of his life.
Although this is a picture book it is content heavy with a lot of text
and higher vocabulary.
