John Ronald’s Dragons: The Story of J.R.R. Tolkien Illustrated by Eliza Wheeler PICTURE BOOK
Roaring Brook Press, 2017.
$18.99 Content: G.
John Ronald grew up loving dragons and words
that sounded strange. He had a mother
who often read to him and his little brother, but when she passed away he lived
in a boarding school where he had a tight group of friends. As John grew older he fell in love with a
woman named Edith, served in World War I and went on to teach at Oxford
University. He wrote books to entertain
his own children that had dragons and other worlds. Those books became The Hobbit and the Lord of
the Rings.
This picture book about the
life of Tolkien is well done and simple.
The illustrations are thought out and reflect the parts of Tolkien’s
life that he included in his books. The back
of the book includes a more detailed biography, an explanation of the
inspiration for the illustrations, famous quotes Tolkien made about dragons,
and a list and description of his dragons.
Although this is a children’s picture book, die-hard fans of Tolkien
will enjoy it as well.
