You’re Doing That in the Talent Show?! by Lynn Plourde, illustrated by Sue Cornelison - ADVISABLE

Plourde, Lynn. You’re Doing That in the Talent Show?!  Illustrated by Sue Cornelison.  PICTURE BOOK.  Disney Hyperion, 2016.  $16.99.
Penelope is a large and loud hippo and her best friend is a small and quiet mouse named Tiny.  Penelope shouts for joy when she sees a poster at school for a talent show.  Tiny tells her that she is making a scene.  She can’t wait to make a scene in the talent show with her best friend Tiny.  Penelope comes up with several great ideas, but Tiny response is always, “You’re doing THAT in the Talent show?!  Count me out.”  Penelope agrees to be in the chorus with Tiny.  The night of the show, Penelope does her ballet-Rapunzel-trapeze act and gets stuck—literally.  Tiny comes to her rescue and joins the act.  The book also has a page of, “Tips for a Spectacular Performance”; including: practice, audience, voice, position, mistakes, and politeness.

Penelope’s imagination and enthusiasm is contagious.  Her character is outgoing and outstanding.  Tiny’s shy nature and quiet demeanor provides an excellent foil for her.  Still it is when the friends work together that they steal the show.  The illustrations are cheery and imaginative and a perfect match for Penelope’s personality.  Penelope and Tiny are also in, You’re Wearing That to School?!
