Weatherford, Carole Boston Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou
Hamer, Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement.
PICTURE BOOK. NON-FICTION.
Candlewick, 2015. $18.
Weatherford speaks in Fannie Lou Hamer’s voice , telling her
story from her early days sharecropping in virtual slavery, through beatings as
she tried to exercise her right to vote, and her work in the Democratic Party
to bring a voice to African Americans.
While formatted like a picture book, it is very text heavy
and much more suitable for a middle school project, perhaps as
inspiration. The story is well worth
hearing.
