Harrison, Hannah E. Bernice Gets Carried Away. PICTURE BOOK. Penguin Young Readers
Group, 2015. $16.99. Content: G. Birthday parties are supposed to be fun-
unless you don’t get a rose on your piece of cake, the piñata is broken before
your turn and you are stuck with the least favorite soda flavor. Bernice is simply having a horrible
time. When it’s time to pass out
balloons, Bernice decided she is going to not only be first to receive one, but
isn’t even going to share. As she grabs
onto the bunch of balloons, she is suddenly carried away into the sky. Bernice learns how to share her balloons one
by one, ends up floating back to the ground, and finds that sharing with
everyone brings her more happiness than ever before. The illustrations are unique and
beautiful. The story lacks
excitement. The theme about competition and
sharing is important, but the execution wasn’t as good as I hoped it would
be. Pre-K. EL (K-3). OPTIONAL. Reviewer: SL
