Oona is training to be the magician of Dark Street, part of
which is taking a series of unknown tests. Together with her friend, a raven
named Deacon, she sets out to prepare for these tests, but is quickly
sidetracked by a mystery. Oona loves to solve mysteries and this one may be
related to finding her father’s killers. A rose knot is the key and Oona starts
to unravel the mystery, but soon enough she must face each test, which only
grow more dangerous. Not to mention that her crush doesn’t seem to be crushing
on her anymore!
Although this seems to be the 3rd or 4th
book in a series, it was pretty easy to get the drift and it could work as a
read alone for a middle school reader. Although the plot didn’t appeal to me at
all with its unlimited magic and some cheese, it was so well written and
interesting that I couldn’t help but slip into the world. There is a dark
element I didn’t care for: that the main character killed her mom and baby
sibling on accident while learning magical, which is referred to quite often, which
makes her focus on mystery solving instead of perfecting her magic kind of
messed up in light of the gruesome tragedy.
