Oelschlager, Vanita Ivy in Bloom: The Poetry of Spring from Great Poets and Writers of the Past, illustrated by Kristin Blackwood. PICTURE BOOK. Vanita Books, 2009. $17.95. Content: G.
Ivy is tired of the long winter, but as she looks out the window and then ventures outside, she begins to see signs of the coming spring. The text is a mixture of original poetry and lines from classic poems.
The illustrations are absolutely wonderful, the concept is interesting, and the author's verses are lovely and well-written. Unfortunately, cobbling together out-of-context lines of many old poems makes for a choppy text that does not flow well and is very difficult to follow.
