Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson - ESSENTIAL

Sanderson, Brandon Steelheart, 386 pgs. Random House Children’s Books, 2013. $19. Language: 2 swears; Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG.

Newcago is controlled by the Epics after the Calamity.  All Epics have their own individual weaknesses and strengths.  The Reckoners try to find their weaknesses and destroy them one at a time.  David, whose father was killed by the Epic, Steelheart, has worked and researched for ten years to find a way to take Steelheart down.  David has seen “Steelheart bleed” and knows his weakness.

Suspense and action highlight this super villain story.  Sanderson’s excellent character development reminds me of the great characters in Orson Scott Card’s novels.  Not only are the main characters well-developed, but the Epics are developed so that every reader will be afraid of their strengths.
