Ten year old
twins Jimmy and Stella decide that restoring an old fashioned 100 year old
vehicle called a “Hippomobile” is the answer in saving their dying town. Crazy
characters and fun colloquial phrasing in footnote form adds to the fun of this
delightful story of a town that comes together to aid in the adventure of
saving their homes.
One
interesting note on this book is that the “Hippomobile” was an actual vehicle
invented over 100 years ago, and that the author’s wife built one in their
backyard. It is fun to watch the twins grow and become hero’s of this tale,
while living a reclusive life in a town that is falling apart. It is an
interesting read, due to the footnotes of explanation for some of the rural
midwest slang. This takes some getting used to but adds to the aesthetics of
the story.
