Eruption: Volcanoes and the Science of Saving Lives by Rusch - ESSENTIAL

Rusch, Elizabeth Eruption: Volcanoes and the Science of Saving Lives, photographs by Tom Uhlman.  72 p. Houghton Mifflin, 2013.  $19.  Content: G.

In 1985, Nevado del Ruiz, a volcano in Columbia, erupted after more than a century of dormancy, killing 23,000 people.  Five years earlier, Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington.  Scientists headed to Mount Pinatubo in the Phillippines; monitoring the volcano closely, they saved millions of lives as they warned the country of an eminent eruption in 1991.  Read the story of the people of the Volcano Disaster Assistance Program as they travel the world, monitoring volcanoes and saving millions of lives.  Volcanoes are gigantic, dangerous and unpredictable.  These men and women have made the science of volcanoes their lives.

I don’t think there is a series on the planet that is more in tune with the Common Core and excellent, modern science.  You cannot go wrong buying this entire series.
