Rouss, Sylvia A., and Rouss, Shannon. Ill. By Anna Iosa. A Watermelon in the Sukkah. Pgs. 29.
Kar-Ben Publishing, 2013. $16.95. PICTURE BOOK.
In class, everyone is asked to
bring their favorite fruit to hand in the Sukkah. Michael, however, brings a
watermelon as his favorite. Will he figure out a way to hang or will he have to
bring his second favorite? A cute enough story with illustrations that are
colorful and eye-catching, but it never really explains the holiday, even in
the author’s note at the end. In addition, the story doesn’t lend itself well
to a read aloud. This is book is better suited to children who are familiar
with the holiday, so would best work in a library that has a need for Jewish
holiday books. EL (K-3). OPTIONAL. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian,
WHI Public Library.
