Young Elsie doesn’t like the quiet of the prairie or how alone she feels, but one day when she chases her canary out of the house after it escapes its cage, she learns to hear and love the sounds of the prairie. She finds companionship with the wild birds. At the end of the book her father shows up with a dog and some chickens which makes Elsie even happier. Beautiful illustrations.
