Murder Afloat by Jane Leslie Conly

Murder AfloatConly, Jane Leslie, Murder Afloat. Disney Hyperion, 2010. Pgs. 164. Language: PG (1 swear, no “f”s), Violence: G, Sexual Content: G

Benjamin Orville leaves the life any boy in 1868 would dream of. He has his own pony, is trusted to do things on his own, and is well-treated by his family. When Benjamin inadvertently gets kidnapped by a group of sailors looking for cheap labor, however, his life is changed dramatically. He has to learn to quickly survive on the oyster boats, make friends with the other kidnapped gentleman on the boat, and find a away to escape his captors. Will Benjamin be able to find his way home and make it to safety?

A great survival adventure for reluctant readers. The characters are likable. The plot is fairly well-developed and does a good job of holding the reader’s interest. Readers who like adventure, survival stories, and high seas stories will enjoy reading this book. EL(4-6), MS. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Jessica M, Library Media Specialist, Olympus Jr. High.
