Ten Birds by Cybele Young

Young, Cybele Ten Birds.  Kids Can Press, 2011.  $16.95.  PICTURE BOOK.  Ten little birds need to get across a river.  Through engineering and thought, nine birds, from “Brilliant” to “Remarkable”, devise clever contraptions to make the trek.  The tenth bird, who is only labeled “Needs Improvement”, has the most sensible solution to the problem.  Most small children won’t get the point of the story, but they will enjoy the birds’ silly contraptions and the last bird’s practicality.  I loved the black and white drawings – I think color would have taken away from the story.  I think adults will like this most – especially to use to make a point during faculty meeting!  EL – OPTIONAL.
