Rex Zero: The Great Pretender by Tim Wynne-Jones
Wynne-Jones, Tim, Rex Zero: The Great Pretender. Farrar Straus Giroux, 2010. Language; PG (8 swears, no “f”s), Violence: PG, Sexual Content: G
Growing up in 1963 is pretty great for Rex. He has a great group of mystery-solving friends and middle school is about to start. Things are looking up until Rex finds out his family is moving for the eighth time. The new house is just across town, but he would have to change schools. Together the band of friends devise a secret plan for Rex to make his parents believe he is going to the new school while still attending his old school. Complicating matters are a budding romance with one of his classmates, bullies in his new neighborhood, and a science experiment his sister is conducting in the back shed. Will Rex find a way to have the best of both worlds or will his pretending come back to bite him?
A fun, entertaining book for reluctant readers. The characters are easy to relate to. The plot is entertaining and holds the reader’s interest. Readers who like historical fiction and realistic fiction will probably enjoy reading this book. MS. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Jessica M, Library Media Specialist, Olympus Jr. High.
