Sunny by Jason Reynolds - ADVISABLE

Reynolds, Jason Sunny 159 pages. Antheneum Books for Young Readers,  2018.  $17 Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: PG - death of mother Violence: G.

Sunny is a runner on the Defenders track team, but he only runs because his dad wants him to honor his mother (who died when Sunny was born) by doing her favorite thing - running.  Sunny would rather do his mother's other favorite thing - dancing.  When he forfeits a race, Coach makes him the discus thrower instead.

The voice of Sunny is great!  He's very interested in the sounds of things, so there is a lot of onomatopoeia. He writes in a diary and so the reader is well aware of his thoughts.  Although it's book three in the Track series, it stands on its own, and is an essential part of the series. However, there is not as much track action in this - not so much sports book as it is an issues book.   There's a good bit of drama around his relationship with his dad.
