Sophie Mouse's class has a new student: a snake! Sophie and her classmates have heard terrible things about snakes, so no one will play with Owen. But when Sophie realizes that Owen is feeling sad and left out -- despite actually being pretty nice -- she knows that she must be brave enough to be his friend.
This is a sweet, if predictable, start to a chapter book series. The lesson about not judging others because of their looks is a good one. So is the reminder that brand-new students may seem different, but they deserve friendship and kindness. The large font, small chapters, and adorable illustrations make this one accessible for newer readers.
