Mya Tibbs is a fourth grade student living in Bluebonnet,
Texas. In preparation of the upcoming Fall Festival, Mya’s elementary school is
holding Spirit Week. The students are
paired up and the winning partners in each grade win VIP tickets to the
festival, allowing them to get free food, front-row tickets to the shows and
first in line for all the rides. But Mya
and her popular “best friend” Naomi don’t end up being paired up. Instead, Mya gets partnered with the school
bully, Mean Connie Tate and can’t get out of it. In retaliation, Naomi starts rumors about Mya
and ends their friendship. However, Mya
will do whatever is necessary to save this friendship.
I think readers will love Mya. She’s a spunky, creative, caring girl. Author Crystal Allen shows the verbal side of
bullying and the powerful and negative effects of rumors. This book offers great lessons about
friendship and showcases the behavior of a true friend. This book has a creative cast of characters,
including Mya’s older brother Nugget, who we will hopefully be seeing more of
in the next book in this series.
EL – ADVISABLE.
