Tegen, Katherine The Story of the Easter Bunny, illustrated
by Sally Anne Lambert. BOARD BOOK. Harper Collins Publishers, 2017. $7.99.
A
kind older couple spend all winter preparing eggs and baskets for the coming
Easter when they will deliver a basket to every child in the village.
Throughout preparations, their little rabbit watches and learns. Then comes a
year when the couple is too old to do all the work, so their little rabbit
takes over the egg dyeing, basket weaving, and chocolate making. Eventually he
moves on to his own home where he engages the help of other rabbits to do the
work, and thus becoming the traditional Easter Bunny.
I appreciated this book
that captures the tale of the rather mystifying Easter Bunny in a very simple
way. The illustrations are nice and the story very straightforward. It does not
seem to fit the usual criteria for a board book, however, as there was a great
deal of text on every page. As such it is more appropriate to read to an older
audience than the usual board book crowd, but I imagine the publisher is hoping
the small board book finds its way into a good number of Easter baskets this
year.
