Lakin, Patricia Made By Hand Skateboards, NON-FICTION PICTURE BOOK. Simon and Schuster (Aladdin), 2017. $17.99. Content: G.
Jake Eshelman has loved skateboards since he was a little kid. Now, working with his girlfriend’s dad making picture frames, he has access to some great small pieces of wood, which he turns into one-of-a-kind handmade skateboards. This fun picture book gives a basic description of a skateboard, a brief history of the sport and then a step by step description with beautiful photographs of Jake making a skateboard.
I especially loved the ending where the author encourages the reader to make something by hand, and to be creative. Includes a timeline (1920’s to 2010), a glossary, and resources including skateboard websites. This would make a great gift for the skateboard enthusiast. I can see the skaters at my school picking this up, it doesn’t look “little kid” at all, a simple informative read.
