Hall, Michael Wonderfall, Illustrated by Hall, Michael.
PICTURE BOOK. Greenwillow (Harper Collins), 2016. $17.99. Content: G
This book is fall told from the perspective of an acorn tree. Each
page is much like a short simple poem, the author using words that end in Fall
as part of each title. Like Peacefall, Eventfall, Thankfall. We see back to
school pass to Halloween and to thanksgiving and ending in the first snow of
winter (Snowfall). The illustrations are large and bright and filled with fall
animals. Information is provided at the end about the animals and in
particular, Grey Squirrels.
The blended words are creatively spelled, but for a school
library mis-spellings are usually frowned upon. I didn’t enjoy the short little
poems and would have liked a story or just a short paragraph. Its simple enough
to read to a Kindergarten class or even Pre-K, but sort of boring because of the
format, and a bit confusing because of the point of view. Wouldn’t be my first
choice for a lesson about fall, or for a collection of fall stories.
