The Water Princess Illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds PICTURE BOOK G.P.
Putnam’s Sons, 2016. $17.99 Content: G.
Gie Gie believes herself to be the princess of her part of Africa, she
claims the starry sky and dusty earth to be part of her kingdom. She wishes that she could control the water
and have it flow closer to where she lives, because she has to travel far and
spend all day just to gather water for her family. Gie Gie has friends that she plays with down
at the river, but her and her mother have to work hard to transport it back to
their home.
This book is based on a true
story of the difficulties some people have gathering water in Africa. The illustrations are fantastic and although
this is a hard task, the character is positive about gathering water for her
family. There is a two page spread at
the end of the book that shows pictures of those people who travel far for
their water and what the model Georgie Badiel is doing to raise awareness and
money to help build safe and clean wells for remote villages in Africa.
