The Night World by Mordicai Gerstein -- ADVISABLE

Gerstein, Mordicai The Night World. PICTURE BOOK. Little, Brown and Company (Hachette Book Group), 2015. $18.00. Content: G.

When a boy's cat wants out in the middle of the night, she encourages him to accompany her. Together they slip through the sleeping house and out into the nighttime world of the backyard.

The mostly-monochromatic illustrations are beautiful, capturing the otherworld feeling of a familiar world at night. While children who read this may need to be discouraged from exploring their own backyards alone in the middle of the night, perhaps they could try the same experiment when accompanied by a parent or older sibling. This book would work well for a read-aloud and class discussion, although it might be difficult for students in the back to see the pictures since there is very little color or contrast (as befits the mood of the book itself).
