The Battle of the Vegetables by Matthieu Sylvander - OPTIONAL

Sylvander, Matthieu The Battle of the Vegetables, illustrated by Perceval Barrier. PICTUREBOOK. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (Clarion), 2013. $15.99.  Content: PG (spoiler - some vegetables get eaten)

When the leeks in the garden are talking about where they would like to travel, and the cow next door overhears and makes them believe she is one of Santa’s reindeer, the leeks are doomed! When the carrots see what happened to the leeks, they decide to tunnel out of the garden, but end up in a rabbit warren. The third story is about the impossible love of a leek and a carrot and how it starts a war in the garden.

Full of humor and very dark, this is a silly read that may have more appeal to the adults.  A nice lesson in inference, this book would work well in a language arts classroom teaching personification and irony as well.
