Brett, Jan The Animals’
Santa G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 2014. PICTURE BOOK
$17.99 Content: G.
The animals in the forest recount last year’s
Christmas in which they were left little gifts outside of their homes. Snowshoe, a big rabbit, tells his little
brother Snow about the animals’ Santa, but little Snow doesn’t know if he
believes. Snowshoe puts out ice chimes
and when animals’ Santa comes to leave gifts they look up to see that it is a
big snow owl. Little Snow believes in
Santa now.
Here’s the thing about Jan
Brett-her drawings are amazing, so even when the storyline isn’t my favorite
the drawings are enchanting. Throughout
the main story there are sidebars where little mice wearing elf costumes are
preparing the gifts for animals’ Santa.
The little brother was a bit whiny and I have a hard time that he had to
see the owl to believe in Santa, but again the illustrations outweigh any
issues I had with the story.
