Summer is off to
work the wheat harvest so that her family has money to pay the mortgage. She
juggles dealing with her very traditional Japanese grandparents, her brother’s
realization that he is very different, and a crush. When it counts, Summer must
step up to help when her grandparents can’t work their assigned jobs.
This is a well
written book that teachers will love. Its contains a couple of unique
perspectives; Japanese culture and the wheat harvester’s culture. I thought the
characters were genuine and well developed. That being said, I thought it was a
boring read. Its slow moving and the details of wheat gathering were
uninteresting to me. I honestly think that students won’t read this one on
their own.
