In Lucia's Neighborhood by Pat Shewchuk and Marek Colek -- OPTIONAL

Shewchuk, Pat and Marke Colek In Lucia's Neighborhood 32 pgs. Kids Can Press, 2013. $16.95. PICTURE BOOK.

Lucia takes the reader on a tour of her neighborhood, including the park with its dog walkers and people doing Tai Chi, the shops selling flowers, the neighbors' yards with their varied landscaping, and preparations for the annual Portuguese Senhor Da Pedra festival.

Although Lucia invites readers to listen to the story of her neighborhood, it is more a list of things she sees -- some unusual, some mundane -- than an actual story. The list style makes this one less engaging, but comparing and contrasting Lucia's neighborhood with the reader's could add a sense of relevance and connection and allow students to practice an important skill at the same time. May also be a nice beginning to a unit on urban development or the differences among many types of neighborhoods. Decent, but muted and stiff-feeling, illustrations accompany the text.
