Koster, Gloria The Peanut-Free Café. Illustrated by Maryann Cocca-Leffler. 32 pgs. Albert Whitman & Company,
2012. $7.99. PICTURE BOOK. I was intrigued by this book because I have a son
who struggles with food allergies. This
is a humorous and fun was to introduce children to the dangers and struggles of
children food allergies. Simon loves
peanut butter. But a school mate of his
named Grant is fatally allergic to nuts and can’t even sit near anyone eating
it. Grant sits by himself at lunch in
order to avoid a reaction. Simon feels
sorry for Grant and comes up with a solution to the problem: turn part of the
cafeteria into “The Peanut –Free Café”. Anyone who gives up their peanut butter
sandwiches can eat in the café with Grant.
This café is unique because there is a daily movie showing as well and
lunch being eaten. Since peanut butter is Simon’s favorite food, will he be
able to give it up as well? I think the
idea of a peanut free café and a peanut free classroom is critical…but I felt
that showing a movie in the peanut free café was going a little far. Those who
didn’t want to leave their peanut butter sandwiches at home shouldn’t be
punished? I don’t want other kids to go
without because my child has food allergies. I appreciate any changes
teachers/administrators are willing to make on behalf of those with food
allergies but let’s make it fun and safe for everyone. Pre-K. EL (K-3).
