Applegate, Anne The Last Academy, 316 p. Point (Scholastic),
2013. $17. Language: G; Mature Content: G (gossip);
Violence: PG (bullying).
After a
terrible fight with her best friend Lia, Camden leaves for boarding school
without saying goodbye. Her new school,
Lethe, seems to be fairly typical – upper crust, snotty roommates, gorgeous
prepster boys and lots of homework. But
something is not quite right. Barnaby
Charon, a weird man Camden met on the plane over, is also at the school –
seeming to come in and out as he pleases.
Plus, students are disappearing and Camden is taking the blame – blame
she does not deserve. Little by little
Camden starts putting the clues together.
Adults – you probably can put it all together, just from those couple of
names, but shhhhh – don’t give anything away. Even though I was many times frustrated by the plotting, I will tell you that I cried and cried during the last few pages. The cover is a perfect compliment to the
story.
