Goyangi Means Cat by Christine McDonnell -OPTIONAL

McDonnell Christine & Illustrated by Johnson, Steve and Fancher, Lou Goyangi Means Cat, 32 pgs. Viking Juvenile, 2011. $11.55. EARLY READER
This is the story of Soo Min, a little Korean girl who is adopted by a family in America. She doesn’t know very much English and her new family doesn’t know much Korean. The best thing about her new life was the cat Goyangi. When the cat gets lost Soon Min helps to look for her? Will she be able to find her?
A beautifully illustrated book! The pictures lend a blurry feel, as if Soon Min is in a fog of confusion. I was hoping that this book would be a great way for students to experience what it might be like to be in Soo Min’s shoes, an adoptee from a foreign country. But it didn’t lend much insight to Soo Min’s feelings (until the cat is lost..then she is sad). Did she like her old life? Was she excited for a new home? Does she understand what is going on in her life? I was disappointed not to find out these answers.
