Barry B. Wary by Leslie Muir –NOT RECOMMENDED

Muir, Leslie and Illustrated by Gifford, Carrie Barry B. Wary 32 pgs. Hyperion Book CH, 2011. $11.55 EARLY READER
Barry is a spider with an appetite for bugs. He loves to eat them in soufflés’, ice cream, and barbeque. One day he realizes he is lonely, but because of his habits, naturally the other bugs in the area are afraid. One day he spies a beautiful butterfly glittering in the flowers. He is in love. But she flies away, so Barry knows what he must do. Can he clean up his act and find his true love?
The rhyming poetry of this book is wonderful! None of the words felt placed just to keep the rhyme going, it was very well written. The illustrations are vivid and creative. However, I didn not like the plot at all, especially the ending. I thought it gave off mixed messages. *Spoiler Warning: You should change who you are to find a friend, something beautiful will never be friends with something ugly (no one will infact), if you have bad habits then they are the real you, and worse of all -Food can be the love of your life. Ugh! Maybe a student would miss this perspective, but I would not purchase it.
EL –NOT RECOMMENDED. Reviewer: Stephanie MLS graduate.

I wholeheartedly agree with Stephanie's evaluation of this book. It had the potential to be quite good but really missed the mark. My instinct tells me Leslie Muir's next endeavors will be much better.
