Shusterman, Neal Everfound, 512 p. Simon & Schuster, MAY 2011. $17.99.
Language: G (5 swears, 0 ’f’’); Violence: PG (killing of humans to create Afterlights); Mature Content: G.
Nick’s plan to rid Everlost of Mary Hightower failed spectacularly. Now Nick has dissolved into the Chocolate Ogre, though Mikey is try desperately to save him. Allie has been captured by Milos, who has control of Nick’s train. Milos killed Mary and prevented her from going into the tunnel of light and he is trying to hold Mary’s Afterlights together long enough to wait out the nine months before Mary awakes. And in order to strengthen Mary’s numbers, Milos is willing to take skinjacking to another level and harvest (kill) humans in large numbers in order to create more Afterlights. Everything seems to be against Nick and his friends – but this is Everlost, so maybe, just maybe, there may be the slimmest chance they can save the world.
I think Neal Shusterman is brilliant. I didn’t think there was anyway he could tie this all up, but he managed to hold me riveted and alternately scare me, surprise me and satisfy me. What a rush!
