Kenney, Karen States of Matter Investigations, 32 pages. NON-FICTION. Lerner, 2018. $20. 9781512440065
This book explores states of matter with short chapters on what
is matter, how does heat melt ice, how does fire change wood, how does a fire extinguisher
work, and what happens when a volcano erupts. It features historical figures
and discoveries, an experiment readers can try for themselves, and lots of
analogies that students will relate to –like ice cream and camp fires. Contains
diagrams and bright photographs.

lthough this is a nice book for upper elementary –I get zero requests from teachers and students for books on this topic from those grade levels. Younger grade teachers love cute fictional picture books on this topic for attention grabbers and we do have a couple. I believe that is because this topic is better taught by example (like in class demonstrations and experiments or even videos) rather than by reading about it. Despite this I have a few already on this topic and they have never been checked out.
