Polacco, Patricia Because of Thursday. PICTURE BOOK. Simon
& Schuster, 2016. $17.99. Content: G
Annie and her husband, Mario, run a successful diner where
everybody loves her pasta salad. When Mario passes away, Annie gives up the
diner and cooking. But one Thursday she finds a kitten, names him Thursday, and
her world brightens again. She starts cooking, reopens the diner and with her
cat’s help, creates a brand new—and even tastier!—pasta dish.
This is a very
typical Polacco book. It tells a fairly detailed, somewhat grown-up, story that
has a happy ending. My major complaint about this author’s books is that they
are far too long to use in a read-aloud situation. There is nothing terribly
special about this story, but people who love pasta or cats or Guy Fieri from
television might enjoy it.

A past librarian at my school collected nearly everything this author has ever written. They have been checked out once in five years, by a 4th grade teacher during an author study. The students enjoyed the unit, but I think the stories are more appealing to grownups.
