In this second book of the series, the crew of the pirate ship the Black Hole decide to spend a day off ship at the beach. When Jim’s parents discover a cave and don’t come out, Jim decides to go in after them. But he leaves a note with his dog, Bones, to go to his friend Matilda for help if he doesn’t come out. After he fails to reappear, Bones brings Matilda there and she discovers that evil sea hags have bespelled the family and their ship. Its up to her to rescue the entire Jolley-Rogers family!
The format/reading level mismatch that was so glaring in the first book, is much less in this second book. If the first book read this way, I would add it to the library in a heartbeat. The complexity of the plot, the vocabulary and the content issues I had in the first book are all brought down to a second grade level. The illustrations continue to be top notch, some of my very favorite in a chapter book! I wish the first book was more like this one, but I am going not to add this second book when I flat out refuse to add the first, as I would forever have readers asking for the first book and not wanting to start the series without it.
