Becca King is on the run. Her ability to hear others’ thoughts has resulted in her discovering dangerous information about her stepfather. Becca’s mother has deposited her on an island off the coast of Washington with strict instructions that will enable her to hide and stay safe. Unfortunately, things quickly go wrong after Becca’s arrival and she is forced to make decisions that could have deadly consequences. Mystery, romance, friendship, and the paranormal mix to create an intricate story.

This book is the first in a series about the lives and loves of the people on Whidbey Island. There are so many plots running through this book that the story is muddled and tedious. The main story is a mystery about who pushed a young man off a hiking trail resulting in his comatose state. The resolution to the mystery is unintentionally laughable leaving the reader to wonder if somehow the greater point was lost among the abundant subplots. These subplots fall victim to their overwhelming numbers as many are abandoned without explanation or quickly resolved with a simplicity that causes frustration. Perhaps the innumerable stories will be resolved in future volumes, but the first book does not inspire enough of an interest to cause a reader to continue with the series.
