Felicity has spent her entire life in
Scarletville, a town known for its sanctuary for redheads. In creating
this sanctuary, the citizens of Scarletville have fostered an atmosphere where
those with red hair are treated better and have more advantages than everyone
else. Felicity has been one of the lucky ones – she is beautiful and
popular, however, she has a secret. Felicity doesn’t really have red
hair; she has been secretly dying her hair for years. She knows she must
keep this secret because she can’t risk the consequences to herself and her family
if the truth comes out. Unfortunately someone knows her secret and is
threatening to expose her unless she complies with their demands.
I truly
enjoyed this book. The idea seemed shallow to base so much importance on
the color of a person’s hair but the author was able to portray this in a way
that was serious and intense but not overly dramatic and it hooked me from
beginning to end. The story flowed nicely and the main characters were
developed. Felicity’s actions were realistic with a mixture of despair and
determination that made her likeable, and I found myself rooting for her as she
tried to protect those she loved while simultaneously trying to be true to
herself and what she wanted from life.
